Yannis was introduced to art through drawing and painting, two means of expression that have always been present in his artistic work.
From a very young age, he worked at graphic design companies such as A & P Georgantas, which helped him acquire techniques and lithographic and printmaking design knowledge. ᾽᾽I will always remember K. Grammatikopoulos’s visits to the workshop when he used to design directly on the stone using a pastel.”
Later on, while studying art, he chose to express through geometric shapes, lines and axes thus creating space and perspective which is something we notice in his works until today. His teacher P. Tetsis used to call him “The Axial”.
In his mature artistic period, he often weds two-dimensional painting techniques to three-dimensional sculpture techniques by using mixed media techniques.
Collage, oil or acrylic painting on canvas and aquarelle paper are some of his basic techniques.
In his paintings, he adds three-dimensional sculptural elements (stairs, clamberers, faces as well as cheap objects such as eggshells, etc.). He also uses the qualities of abstract expressionism for the background in his paintings while the sculptural intervention determines the theme.
Finally, the colors are usually vivid. The selection of the colors as well as the combination of warm and cool colors are determined by the subject of the painting. He is also interested in a monochrome approach while deploying the development of color tones.
